We recently drove from Salt Lake City to Colorado Springs via Copper Mountain. The night before our drive from Copper to Colorado Springs, I managed to snag a last minute appointment to Melanzana – so we drove through Leadville, and became incrementally cooler. Here’s why you should add Leadville to your next roadtrip.
1. MELANZANA!!
So I have been hearing about the awesomeness that is Melanzana for a while now…and I have never managed to actually get an appointment (they use appointments to make sure they are able to maintain stock, since all their inventory is made in-house in Leadville, by hand). They’re booked for 6-8 months out…and I’ve never managed to snag an appointment. I’m guessing it was the surprise spring snow, but the night before we were leaving Copper, there were a bunch of appointments available for the next day, so obviously I made us an appointment!
And I got a Melly. And since my appointment allowed for a purchase of 2 items, Jerry got one too. They are so soft! And also, we are now much, much cooler now.

Jerry still doesn’t really understand the hype, but a few days later in an REI in Colorado Springs, we got a comment from an employee of “love your Mellys!” so maybe he’ll soon start to understand the hype (beyond the comfort and warmth, of course).
2. Two Mile Brewing Company
Ever heard of the mile high club? Well, this one is twice as twice as high. On our way out of town, we dropped into Two Mile Brewing Company, which advertises itself as America’s highest brewery at 10,200 ft.
The beer was great, and we even got a four pack to go.

3. Downtown
I love a good mountain town. Who doesn’t?
Leadville’s downtown is your quintessential mountain town – fully of quaint cafés and antique shops. Wander through it and enjoy the pretty colors and mountain views!

4. The Golden Burro Cafe
Before your appointment at Melanzana, drop into the Golden Burro Cafe for a breakfast burrito smothered in green chili sauce. This cafe is has that natural retro vibe that cafes today aspire to but often can’t achieve. (Don’t be tempted by the chicken and waffles; burrito all the way!)
